At Chesterton Academy of Our Lady of Hope we believe in the development of the whole person which includes a competitive spirit and healthy body. Athletics teach our youth the important lessons of teamwork, perseverance, commitment, and friendship. They provide the foundation for a lifelong healthy lifestyle, self-confidence, a sense of belonging, and the toughness to overcome life’s obstacles.
We also believe in placing sports in its proper order of importance in one’s life. Our founder G.K. Chesterton once said:
“I entertain a private suspicion that physical sports were much more effective and beneficent when they were not taken quite so seriously. One of the first essentials of sport being healthy is that it should be delightful; it is rapidly becoming a false religion with austerities and prostrations.”
While Chesterton athletes will be encouraged to strive for excellence in victory, they will be reminded to place God and spiritual victory above everything.
Many Chesterton Academies across the country compete in their local high school athletic leagues, but it takes a couple of years to build up enrollment and coordination before completing at that level. In our first year we plan to organize club teams.
It is our intention to compete, insofar as we can, in the Rhode Island Interscholastic League in our first year. For example, we hope to field teams for both cross country and track. Moreover, all of our students will be eligible to play sports in their originating school districts. For example, a Chesterton student who resides in Coventry will be able to play baseball at Coventry High School.
In years 2-4 we will roll out Chesterton sports teams and compete with other high schools in the Rhode Island Interscholastic League. RIIL also offers schools the option of creating co-op teams with other high schools to compete in sports that require a large number of players (e.g. football).
If you have any questions about sports at Chesterton please let us know. |
"The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes. Unless a particular man made New Year resolutions, he would make no resolutions. Unless a man starts afresh about things, he will certainly do nothing effective. Unless a man starts on the strange assumption that he has never existed before, it is quite certain that he will never exist afterwards. Unless a man be born again, he shall by no means enter into the Kingdom of Heaven."
